What is sexual health?

World Health Organization definition:

Sexual health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.

Why mention Sex…?

All humans have a sexual identity. This describes how we experience and express ourselves as sexual beings. This is influenced by:

  • Physical sex or gender- female, male or intersex (have both female and male DNA)
  • Psycho-social influences – heterosexual norm (the assumption that everyone is heterosexual), family, culture and religion.
  • Sexual Orientation – who are we attracted to? Male, female or both. This may be already know or a journey.
  • Sexual behaviour – who we have sexual contacts with.
  • Sexual Identity – how we identify to ourselves and to society.

How do I keep myself healthy?

Emotionally

  • Practice good oral sex… TALK ABOUT SEX ….
  • Who with?
  • Where?
  • When?
  • What you like?
  • What you don’t like – boundaries?
  • Safer sex?
  • Contraception?
  • Relationship risks – Start/End

Consent to Sex – What is Consent?

Consent occurs when a person freely and voluntarily agrees to sexual activity.

Sexual assault occurs when someone does not give consent, or is unable to consent – asleep or unconscious – significantly intoxicated or affected by drugs.
